Obama comes out swinging for health care reform
Staff Reporter | Posted March 9, 2010 11:52 AM
In a fiery speech on Monday, President Obama made one of his strongest calls yet for health care reform.
Speaking at Arcadia University in Pennsylvania, Obama told a rally-style crowd that health care reform is urgent in the face of rapidly rising health care costs. Obama also cited a recent conference call held by Goldman Sachs in which an insurance broker told investors to expect insurance companies to continue to raise premiums because they know that they can turn more of a profit on customers they keep.
The President was introduced by Leslie Banks, a self-employed single mother with type 2 diabetes, which the insurance company defines as a pre-existing condition. Banks's insurance provider recently notified her that her premiums would more than double. In addition, her deductible would rise from $500 to $5,000 and she would lose preventative care and prescription coverage.
President Obama cited the example of Banks and others in calling for an up-or-down vote from Congress. "The United States Congress owes the American people a final, up or down vote on health care. It's time to make a decision. The time for talk is over. We need to see where people stand."
