Eric Massa's bizarre interview with Glenn Beck
Staff Reporter | Posted March 10, 2010 11:00 AM
Newly retired New York Congressman Eric Massa took to the airwaves Tuesday night to explain his ever-changing argument that he had been pressured by the White House to resign. But the result was hardly a relief for the ex-congressman and instead prompted more questions about his behavior.
The New York Democrat, accused of multiple ethics violations involving inappropriate behavior with male staffers, has said that he is not guilty of sexual harassment. But Tuesday night on Fox News's Glenn Beck Show he seemed to accept responsibility for his action. "Not only did I grope him, I tickled him until he couldn't breathe," he said. He added: "Then four guys jumped on top of me. It was my 50th birthday. It was 'kill the old guy.' "
In another part of the interview, Massa seemed to accept responsibility. "I should have never allowed myself to be as familiar with my staff as I was... I own this misbehavior."
Massa also pulled back a bit from his criticism of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, but he continued to insist that Emanuel pressured him to leave office because of his opposition to health care reform. Massa told Beck that Emanuel approached him naked in the shower and put his finger in his chest to prod him on his vote.
"I was in my first two months," Massa told Beck. "I was in a battle about the budget, Rahm was angry with me. He poked his finger in my chest while we were in the shower...Not only did it happen, I will never forget it. Rahm Emanuel doesn't like me. I get it."
"Not since the Alfred Hitchcock movie 'Psycho' has there been such a famous shower scene," wrote Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz on Wednesday.
Taking the shower metaphor to a new level, Kurtz continues:
I must say, this obscure former Democratic congressman has been as slippery as a bar of soap. He was, you may recall, under investigation by the House ethics committee. He said he wouldn't run for reelection because his cancer had returned. Then, when news of the ethics probe surfaced, he said he would quit immediately. Then he blamed the Democrats for orchestrating his departure because he planned to vote against the health-care bill. (How exactly could they do that? No one can force out a sitting member except by an expulsion vote.)
The interview was so bizarre that even Beck had to admit that it was a waste of time at the end.
