What should the president say tonight?
Staff Reporter | Posted January 27, 2010 8:44 AM
President Obama tonight will deliver his first official State of the Union address.
It's not the first time the president has spoken to a joint session of Congress, but it's his first actual State of the Union speech.
The president is expected to call for a spending freeze, a White House staff pay freeze, a new jobs push, and other measures in his speech tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern time. He will certainly update the nation on the state of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and on his efforts to fight terrorism at home and abroad. Some are even hoping the president will announce his plans to lift the ban on gays in the military.
No doubt, the president will recount some of his successes, but he's also expected to acknowledge his mistakes in tonight's speech, especially as critics in the media and political circles have been pointing fingers in recent days.
There's been a great deal of debate about the meaning of the Massachusetts Senate election last week, and as a result, some are calling for the White House to move more to the right with a more conservative agenda, while others are calling for the president to satisfy his base by pushing for a more progressive agenda.
With polls showing the public still skeptical about the economy, should that be Obama's primary focus? Should he scale back his push for health care reform or push ahead without the 60 seats needed in the Senate to pass his plan?
What do you think? What should the president say tonight in his speech?
