Busted: ACORN 'pimp' arrested in phone tampering plot at Sen. Landrieu's office
Staff Reporter | Posted January 27, 2010 9:40 AM
The man who posed as a pimp to videotape ACORN employees engaged in shady activities is now in trouble himself.
James O'Keefe has been arrested and charged with federal offenses after he was allegedly caught perhaps trying to bug the telephone line at the office of Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA).
O'Keefe and three others reportedly went to Landrieu's Louisiana office claiming to be telephone workers attempting to fix a phone line. Once there, they aroused suspicion from workers after asking questions unrelated to the task of fixing the phone line.
Although originally reported here as a wiretap charge, one of the defense lawyers in the case, J. Garrison Jordan, pointedly noted "there is no wiretap allegation." Asked for a comment after he left jail, O'Keefe told reporters: "The truth shall set me free."
O'Keefe made a name for himself last year after his video of his undercover sting operation at ACORN offices went from the Internet to the television news, causing ACORN to be condemned by Congress in the wake of the scandal.

After actually waiting to what evidence there actually was, I discovered that the police never found any "listening devices" other than ordinary cell phones, which were being used as cameras. O'Keefe (a self-avowed progressive, not a conservative) was investigating Landrieu's claim that their phone lines were out of order to explain constituents never being able to get through. If their phone lines were out of order, why did they find it suspicious that telephone repairmen would show up?
The charges will be quietly dropped, so as to not embarrass Landrieu for lying about her phones.
