As the parade of "I screwed Tiger" skanks inches into double-digits I have to admit my amusement with the story has begun to turn into shrugging indifference. Tiger went out of his way to make himself this biracial, transformative superstar who could do things to a golf ball no one had done, before, after or since. As his fame and winnings ascended he took pains to appear as apolitical and non-controversial as possible. He championed no causes and avoided anything that vaguely hinted of controversy.
Like his buddy Michael Jordan, Woods quickly learned how to transition from just another talented jock into a corporate icon. Of course that meant coming off as indifferent to matters of race, equality and social justice. Tiger Woods is as much a corporate brand as the golden arches of McDonald's or the Nike Swoosh. Brand Tiger may be powerful enough to weather the storm of these "bimbo eruptions" unless the story takes a more lurid turn (Tiger as a "baby daddy?") and more explicit details of his sex life emerge,
I'm not a fan of golf, but I've walked into my brother's house and stood there as a roomful of Black men sat there hushed and tense as Tiger lined up a last putt to win a tournament and burst into cheers and high fives as it it were the last minutes of the Super Bowl.
For them, I suppose they saw Tiger as The Great Black Hope playing and winning a game that had been dominated by White men. I only saw him as a golfer who merely happened to be Black---sort of.
What at first appeared to be an early Black Friday morning motor vehicle accident has turned into a full-blown sex scandal involving Tiger Woods, his wife and at last count at least eleven alleged mistresses. Woods has not directly addressed the charges of infidelity choosing instead to issue a vague statement on his website stating, "I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart."
Amanda Brooks, a sex worker and author of The Internet Escort's Handbook, has sympathy---and advice--for Woods as to how he could have avoided the trouble he is in now:
Tiger Woods is just proof that no matter how great the woman (his lovely wife, Elie Nordegren), some man somewhere is tired of her.
Personally, I still think a traditional marriage is the worst thing two people can possibly do to each other, but that's just me. It puts unrealistic behavioral expectations on both partners, leading to both of them being not true to themselves and miserable. You end up with both parties seeking fulfillment outside of the marriage, or seeking substitutions (alcohol, shopping, focusing solely on the kids or career).
That said, I'm not sure any of his affairs are proven and since he is not really defending himself he's a target for anyone who wants to say anything. It sounds like a couple of these women could be cheap opportunists. I also think Tiger should be left alone. He's not the first man in history to cheat, nor is he a hypocrite. He h as a clean image but I'm not aware that he's gone around preaching morality. His wife is European and they have a different view of what he has or hasn't done than Americans (and certainly American tabloids).
As for the suggestion of Tiger having one or two reputable independent escorts he turns to on a regular basis---yes, he's almost guaranteed not to have his story in the news. (No agency, no escort who will take risks that get her arrested, no other person involved in her business.) But if these women who are claiming affairs illustrate his taste---quality escorts are older and less bimbo-like, so he might end up making the wrong choices in this arena anyway. (And what a field day the press would have this story!) Or maybe he has seen some paid companions who obviously aren't saying anything.
His apology reminds me a bit of Eliot Spitzer's apology and I wish it didn't. Nor, do I think Tiger should have to apologize to the public for being human. What he and his wife decide to do with their relationship is their private business.
I don't want the utterly stupid psycho-analyzing of Woods that did with Spitzer as to WHY he did it. If he did indeed have these affairs it's probably for the exact same reason he would see an escort, the exact same reasons any married man seeks out new partners. It has nothing to do with his own sense of power, an addiction to risk-taking or any other nonsense. It's that a traditional marriage is sexually and emotionally-confining (often deadening to one or both spouses) and he sought to have his needs fulfilled elsewhere.
If indeed he did this.
