'Precious' wins 3 Golden Globe nominations
Staff Reporter | Posted December 15, 2009 9:58 AM
Question: What do you get when you put Lee Daniels, Monique, Gabourey Sidibe, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Sherri Shepherd, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry in a project together?
Answer: Gold.
The Lee Daniels directed film "Precious: Based On The Novel By Sapphire" was nominated for three Golden Globe awards on Tuesday.
The film itself was nominated for Best Picture, while leading star Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the role of Precious, was nominated for best actress, and Monique was nominated for best supporting actress, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced on Tuesday.
The film features acting performances by several big names, including Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Sherri Shepherd. After the film was made, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry joined on as producers.
The Globe Globes are one of the most prestigious awards in Hollywood and often considered an indicator of the Academy Awards. The Golden Globes will be presented Jan. 17 in Los Angeles.

James,
I saw the movie and thought it was well done -- definitely took you there in terms of telling the story. Monique's performance blew me away. She put her foot in it and walked all around with that role. Gabby was good too. If this film gets any awards during Oscar season, Monique definitely deserves to be among the recipients. She was imminently believeable and really showed her acting chops.
Regarding the subject matter of the film, though the storytelling was very well done, I confess I am sorta kinda tired of this story insofar as bringing black peoples lives to the big screen. I realize the story reflects truth, but it put me in the mind of The Color Purple all over again. That said, I take nothing away from this movie. It was well done and I believe worth seeing.
I was intrigued by your post. What do you think Tyler and Oprah had in mind when they decided to back this film?

Cecil Jones,
You say, "Monique's performance was way too realistic to be called acting."
That has got to be the most ridiculous critique of an actors performance that I have ever heard. That's the goal of acting to make it appear realistic and believeable. You think Monique is that kind of monster in real life (with her own children) so she wasn't really acting? Come on now. You need to just give Monique her props for bringing that character to life.

Cecil Jones,
Venting? That makes even less sense than your other comment attempting to deride the performance because it was too realistic.
I think the portrayal was so real it may have taken some people to a place they were not ready to go. It was indeed hauntingly realistic. I hope Monique wins the Oscar she deserves for that performance.

Cecil Jones,
Let me also add this regarding your comments about Precious' silence and Precious being big enough to fight back.
True enough the girl was fat, but you must remember the story is about a young girl who had been sexually and mentally abused most likely all her life by the two people in the world she is suppose to be able to trust -- and as a child, the two people she is totally dependent upon for basic needs (e.g., food, clothes, shelter). There's not a whole lot a child can do to fight an adult. That's part of the reason these type of predators pick on children -- they can't defend themselves.
Moreover, you can't inflict that kind of psychological damage on a child for years and years without affecting their spirit, their will and basic belief that they have any power to fight. You might respond the same way if someone had spent a lifetime beating and bullying all the fight out of you. We see when Precious got old enough and strong enough (I mean emotionally and mentally strong enough) to stand-up for herself and fight back she got out and got away from her mother and dad.

Cecil Jones,
If nothing else you are consistent. Your comments continue to be practically nonsensical. How you came away from this movie seeing a "hidden" message that it's precious to remain silent in the face of sexual abuse is puzzling. Any such message was definitely hidden because it wasn't there. Oprah Winfrey has spent a good deal of her career trying to empower children to tell a trustworthy adult if they are ever touched inappropriately. Now you think she's promoting a movie that says it's precious to remain silent in the face of sexual abuse. That makes no sense Cecil.
Moreover, I'm inclined to conclude that you lack knowledge concerning child sexual abuse and children in general. Little girls from toddlers to teenagers are sexually abused. Without the intervention of a caring adult it is not reasonable to expect a 4 year old, a 9 year old or even in most instances a 13 year old to speak truth to power as you say in a case of child sexual abuse especially if the child is being abused by a parent.
By the by, IMO it's never a waste of time to attempt to share knowledge or to attempt to enlighten. For the record I'm not trying to convert you to anything. I'm offering you an opportunity to broadend your perspective -- to open your mind. That's my purpose in reading what other have to say and sharing my own thoughts on internet blogs. It's an opportunity for me to gain something as a reader and share something as a writer.
