Glenn Beck to hold March on Washington on anniversary of Dr. King's march
Staff Reporter | Posted November 23, 2009 8:53 AMConservative talk show host Glenn Beck has his own plans to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic March on Washington.
Beck, whose right-wing opinions often run counter to Dr. King's views, plans to hold his own march on Washington next year on the anniversary of the day when King delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.
On August 28, 1963, King shared his dream with an estimated 250,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
Beck chose the same date and the same location to try to make his own history. "Come August 28, I would like you to make your plans now to join me at the feet of Abraham Lincoln in Washington, DC.," Beck told a crowd of supporters recently. The August 28 event is the culmination of his 7 regional educational conventions to teach people how to run for office, register voters and practice "community organizing" tactics for the conservative movement.
One critic said that Beck was perverting the legacy of Dr. King with his march. "When Glenn Beck called for his national rally at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 2010, he twisted the memory of the day for a country that has evolved from slavery to elect it's first black president," a writer noted on The Daily Kos web site.
In King's famous speech, he cited a litany of challenges facing the nation and warned America that blacks would never be satisfied until justice was fully achieved.
There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their self-hood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating: "For Whites Only." We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until "justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream."

It is not good practice to use a broad brush and give minorities advice on what we need to do as if we all speak with one voice. Yet, question Charles for using the same brush.
It is my belief that minorities overwhelmingly vote democrat because republicans do not offer a reasonable alternative. Whites overwhelmingly vote republican for the same.
Now about Benjamin's numbers. This history was revisited after a recent Maddow segment where some right wingers accused one of her guest of revisionist history. To that point, there are some inherent problems with those numbers. First, support for the CRA of'64 was cleanly divided between the north and south, irrespective of political party. It is true that most southern democrats (who later became dixiecrats) voted against the Act, NO southern republicans voted in favor - even though they had smaller numbers in congress at the time.
Southern Dems voted 145-9 in favor while Southern Repubs voted 0-10. Senate Dems from the south voted 1-21 in favor while Repubs voted 0-1. Outside the south, dems voted 145-9 while Republicans voted 138-24.
Hopefully I was able to put those numbers into perspective for you and anyone needing clarification on the oft-mentioned fallacy of Republican support of the CRA.
