Woman arrested and put on trial for wearing pants
Staff Reporter | Posted July 30, 2009 10:05 AM
A female journalist in Sudan has been arrested and put on trial for wearing pants. Lubna Hussein was arrested in a police raid on a restaurant in Khartoum on July 3 for violating Sudan's Islamic law, which strictly forbids women from wearing pants. At least a dozen other women were also arrested.
If convicted, she could face up to 40 lashes, according to ITN News. Ten women have already been whipped recently for violating the law, according to London's Telegraph. Hussein's clothing was considered "indecent," according to reports.
Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein writes for the left-wing Al-Sahafa newspaper and works for the media department of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, the Telegraph reported. She could have sought immunity against the charge because of her job with the UN, ITN reported, but she chose to fight the law instead to stand up for other women.
