The scene that shocked the world

The image traveled quickly around the globe, thanks to a video uploaded on the Internet. A photo of the young woman lying on the ground appeared above the fold on the front page of the Wall Street Journal on Monday, and the unverified image was also shown repeatedly on cable news shows over the weekend.

Moments after the woman falls to the ground, her eyes appear to follow the camera that is videotaping the scene. Then blood gushes out of her mouth and appears over her face. The graphic video demonstrated the power of the Internet to communicate the scenes from Iran, where the government has tried to restrict access to foreign reporters.

Meanwhile, protests continued in Iran over the weekend as leaders tried to crush rebellion with a show of force. The Obama administration also came under fire from some Republicans for not speaking out more forcefully against Iran, but the White House defended its actions, arguing that the U.S. did not want to play into the hands of the government forces who would try to portray the protesters as part of a U.S. led intervention.
