Cartoon depicting Sotomayor as piñata is wrong on so many levels
Joni L. Reynolds | Posted June 4, 2009 10:24 AM
So many magazines and newspapers will run a picture and ask the reader to find the things wrong with the photo. When I look at this cartoon that appeared in the The Oklahoman on Wednesday I see so many offensive things.
1. Sotomayor is hanging as a piñata but the use of a minority hanging is offensive.
2. The President is wearing a sombrero.
3. The crowd is holding bats and they look decidedly male. So the idea of men beating a woman with a club is unacceptable.
4. In short it is simply not thought-provoking or funny.
5. Did the journalistic community not learn anything from the New York Post monkey cartoon?
6. Are there any minorities in these newsrooms when they are reviewing these cartoons?
Probably not and that is why this kind of cartoon gets published.
