Lakers win NBA championship
Staff Reporter | Posted June 15, 2009 8:45 AMThe Los Angeles Lakers have won their 15th NBA championship. The Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic 99-86 Sunday night in Orlando to win the series 4-1.
Kobe Bryant scored 30 points on Sunday to earn his fourth championship ring and win the honor of most valuable player of the finals. Coach Phil Jackson won his tenth NBA championship, making him the most successful coach in basketball history.
The fans in Los Angeles were deprived of a hometown arena victory and the city of Los Angeles has said it doesn't have the money in this recession to throw a parade for the Lakers. "We can't afford to cover the costs," city councilwoman Jan Perry told the Los Angeles Times. "How could we make a decision about people's jobs and then sponsor the parade?"
Fans in Los Angeles took to the streets and some got a little unruly. But a parade is scheduled to take place on Wednesday back in Los Angeles.
