Iran's supreme leader calls for investigation into disputed election

Some observers and activists were hoping the election would mark the beginning of a new period for Iran with a more moderate stance toward the West. But those hopes were dashed with the announcement that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had been re-elected as president on Friday, defeating reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

Demonstrators took to the streets to protest the election results, many suspecting that the election had been stolen. Dozens of people were arrested as police clashed with protesters.

In America, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. was "monitoring the situation as it unfolds" and said the American government "has refrained from commenting" on the election in Iran. "We obviously hope that the outcome reflects the genuine will and desire of the Iranian people," Clinton said in a statement.

Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, speaking on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday, said he had "doubts" about the election results and described Ahmadinejad's overwhelming margin of victory as "unlikely," based on pre-election surveys.
