Black Connecticut church focus of gay teen "exorcism" video
Rod McCullom | Posted June 25, 2009 2:26 PMIs this "Christian" love in action? A black Connecticut church is under investigation by the Connecticut Department of Children and Families after posting a controversial video on YouTube which shows members performing an exorcism of a gay teen's "homosexual demons.
The disturbing video shows leaders of the Bridgeport-based, non-denominational Manifested Glory Ministries in a violent scene reminiscent of The Exorcist. "Prophet" Patricia McKinney is seen screaming at a 16-year-old boy and demanding "homosexual demons" to leave. The video--since taken down on YouTube by the church--"continues for 20 minutes with the boy in a near seizure, even vomiting." The so-called "prophet" yells at the teen: "Right now in the name of Jesus, I call the homosexuality, right now in the name of Jesus."
FOX 61 reported on the video last night. "Prophet Patricia McKinney and her husband, church overseer Kelvin McKinney have a weekly radio show. She wasn't much interested in talking, telling Fox 61's Laurie Perez, 'Don't be following, I'm telling you no.' The only hint of a comment was her saying the ritual shown in the video is just one part of their ministry."
The Associated Press confirms the teen is 16 years old.
Via Rod 2.0 reader Jared (Twitter: @Jardoism), watch the disturbing FOX 61 report of black Christian in love in action where a gay teen, who is more than three times likely to attempt suicide than his straight peers, is subjected to a medieval ritual. Oh and please ask "Prophet" McKinney to cite the exact scripture where Jesus exorcised homosexual "demons" from children.

For those who think homosexual sex is not a choice what do we say about bisexual people? Do we think they are somehow wired in such a way that they can't help having sex with both men and women or are they simply individuals who have made a choice to experiment sexually with both men and women? I think it's the latter.
I'm also in the camp that reads the Bible to say homosexual sex is a sin right along with the other sexual sins outlined in the Bible -- fornication and adultery. When you cross the line into sex that's where the Bible starts defining certain behavior as a sin. A close relationship between a single man and a single woman is fine but if they decide to add sex to that (unwed) relationship, then it's fornication and we've crossed over into sin. Likewise a platonic relationship between a married man and a single woman is fine, but if they decide to add sex to that relationship then it's adultery and we've crossed over into sin. A close relationship between two men or between two women is fine, but if they decide to add sex to that relationship then it's homosexuality and we've crossed over into sin. I think our sexual behavior is clearly a choice. Geeeezzz the world would be an even scarier place if it wasn't.
In terms of a Biblical understanding of sexually immoral behavior I put fornication, adultery and homosexuality all in the same bag -- insofar as how the Bible defines sexual immorality. Homosexuality clearly takes the worst rap because society does not discriminate against fornicators and adulterers the way it does homosexuals -- probably because too many of the rest of us are fornicators and adulterers. By the same token fornicators and adulterers aren't trying to claim that that behavior is not a sin and insisting the rest of society say the same as homosexuals seem to be.

Secondly you didn't really address my point regarding homosexual sex being a choice. Gene therapy, hormone therapy, studies about sexual preference do not give rise to a biological component that either makes, forces or requires one human being to have sex with a male as opposed to female or vice versa. The fact that you may be attracted to someone, attracted to one sex or the other does not mean you therefore lack control when it comes to engaging in a sex act. Sexual behavior is not akin to breathing. With sex you have a choice about what you do and with whom you do it.
My point is there is nothing physiological stopping gay men from having sex with women or straight men from having sex with other men. The only thing stopping us is own minds, our own choices. Unlike race I can't stop myself from physically looking like a black person. I can however stop myself from having sex with another woman or with a man for that matter. We have control over our sexual behavior. Whether we're wired to be attracted to men, women, young boys, young girls, both men and women, other animal species I don't know -- I do know we have control over our sexual behavior and our sexual choices irregardless of who or what we may be attracted to.
As for the common sense factor (i.e., "nobody would ever choose to be in a portion of the populace that is discriminated against and in some countries executed") not necessarily. People choose things that have deleterious effects all the time. For some people once they've experienced homosexual sex they may get caught-up in liking it so much that the trade off is worth it to them.

MLee -- Your point escapes me. The underlying conflict regarding homosexuality is whether you regard it as a sin, whether you see as immoral sexual conduct or whether you think it's perfectly okay -- nothing immoral about homosexual sex. Starting from that premise I cannot accept your suggestion that Catholic priests (who as you say were quite likely heterosexual) molested young boys because the priesthood forced them to deny their sexual urges/desires. By that logic I presume you can excuse the adulterer who works with the cute, sexy, flirtations young secretary everyday, 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week, every week, year after year after year, when he finally succumbs to his carnal nature and has a sexual relationship with her.
Regarding your other point -- you don't get the point I'm addressing. Ian an I were debating whether there is a physiological/biological component that COMPELLS some people to have same sex sex and others to have opposite sex sex. I say there is not. I say I am free to have sex with a man or women based on my free choice, based on what my own mind tells me to do just as gay men and women are free to the same as their minds tell them. Unlike having black skin which is a physiological fact not subject to control by my own mind. No one is talking about forcing gay men to have sex with women. The point is we control over our sexual behavior by the choices we make and there is nothing physiological forcing us to have sex with one gender or the other or to have no sex at all. We determine what we do or don't do sexually by the decisions we make with our own mind.

Ian -- I'm not going to argue with you about religion. I will however say, I expect the "illogical society" you bemoan we will be with us for the duration as religion ain't going nowhere.
You and I will have to agree to disagree on this one because I stand by my view regarding homosexual "conduct" being a matter of choice. To accept attraction in and of itself as the sole criteria for engaging in a sex act removes the moral component which is the crux of the issue in all sexual matters. You say we can't control who we're attracted to. We are simply slaves to our sexual attractions. I don't necessarily know that that's true. I think there are a variety of cultural and environmental factors that affect our views what is sexually attractive/sexually permissible and that is affected by the morals you learn from a given society.

MLee -- Ian and I haven't had a problem understanding each other's point.
Logic is obviously not your strong suit. I'm inclined to think the conversation may well be over your head.
You failed to address the point raised in response to your ridiculous explanation for Catholic priest child abuse. Again, The underlying conflict regarding homosexuality is whether you regard it as a sin, whether you see it as immoral sexual conduct or whether you think it's perfectly okay -- nothing immoral about homosexual sex. Starting from that premise I cannot accept your suggestion that Catholic priests (who as you say were quite likely heterosexual) molested young boys because the priesthood forced them to deny their sexual urges/desires -- and that's what happens when people deny their sexual desires. By that logic I presume you can excuse the adulterer who works with the cute, sexy, flirtatious young secretary everyday, 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week, every week, year after year after year, when he finally succumbs to his carnal nature and has a sexual relationship with her.

Ian -- I too enjoyed the conversation. For the record I fully support equal rights for the LGBT community. There is no justification for discrimination, unequal treatment or mistreatment of any kind on the basis of sexual orientation.
I do however think the gay rights movement has a hard row to hoe in bringing the country around on the question of gay marriage. In my estimation the religious component is very deeply entrenched and I doubt it can be overcome precisely because it is a "religious" component (i.e., grounded in people's "faith" belief system).
My suggestion to resolve the gay marriage issue is take the government out of the marriage business altogether. Change the entire system to civil unions for everyone hetero and homo. Leave "marriage" to the church. Churches could be free to marry whomever they please but the church marriage would carry no legal rights for either gay or straight couples. To obtain the legal rights currently provided cohabitating couples all couples would be required to apply for a civil union. That way we comply with the equal protection requirements of the law because we'd be treating everyone (gay or straight) the same and leave marriage to the purview of religion rather law.
I don't think we are ever going to separate the term "marriage" from the Biblical connotations people associate with it. Many people contend that marriage is an institution established by God. I think our best bet for achieving maritial legal rights for the gay community is to change the whole system to civil unions for all.
