Is $600,000 too much to pay your pastor?
Staff Reporter | Posted April 22, 2009 9:56 AM
Some members of Harlem's Riverside Church are upset that their new pastor, the Rev. Brad Braxton, is being paid more than $600,000 in annual compensation.
Braxton's compensation package is reportedly double that of his predecessor, the Rev. James Forbes, according to a report in Wednesday's New York Daily News. And Forbes was "one of the country's best-known preachers" who had run the church for more than 18 years, according to the paper.
Concerned church members filed suit in Manhattan Supreme Court last week to stop Braxton's installation, scheduled for this Sunday. They say the compensation package is too high for a pastor at a church with a history of supporting social justice causes, and especially in a time of recession.
The Daily News reported that Braxton's compensation package includes $250,000 in salary, $11,500 monthly housing allowance, private school tuition for his child, a full-time maid, entertainment, travel and "professional development" allowances, pension and life insurance benefits and an equity allowance for Braxton to save up to buy a home.
But Judge Lewis Bart Stone denied the request to delay Sunday's installation, according to the Daily News and scheduled a follow up hearing on April 3.
Rev. Braxton was selected to be the sixth senior minister of the church last September and comes to the church with an academic background. He studied at the University of Virginia and at Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar. An author of three books, Braxton received his Ph.D. in New Testament Studies at Emory University in Atlanta and later taught at Wake Forest and Vanderbilt. His father was a Baptist pastor for 46 years.
The church has a long history of activism in social justice, and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous speech, Beyond Vietnam -- A Time to Break Silence, at the church on April 4, 1967, exactly one year before he was assassinated.
Rev. Braxton is scheduled to be formally installed on Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 6 p.m. in the Nave of Riverside Church.

Why do we give a damn what a pastor, or anyone, makes?!?! Worry about your own money! If you want his salary, then do what ever he did to get to that salary.

Jesus preached the Gospel. I imagine that he didn't go around telling people how much they should pay their kings. Nor is he worried about how much this church pays theirs. So that's ok, he does not need the services of the Federal Order of Jesus Police on this one. He good.

Another perspective is that 600k was the price of getting a talented executive that can effectively guide the church during these troubled economic times. No matter how you spin it, this man will be running a multi-multi-million-dollar enterprise (preaching will be less than 10% of his responsibilities). Regardless of our opinions, it's just a fact that good exec leadership isn't cheap.
