Senator Roland Burris is in trouble for possible perjury when asked if he had been contacted by, asked to raise monies for, or actually raised monies for, the Blagojevich campaign. It is possible that Burris may have misrepresented the process by which he was selected. I doubt anyone is surprised that controversy has attached itself to the senator so quickly after his swearing in.
Senator Burris was admitted into Congress under dubious circumstances. He seemed deaf to the political and moral issues that stained his appointment by the now impeached Illinois governor. Burris seemed to think that the issue was his experience and competence rather than Blagojevich's corruption. Who in their right mind wants to be appointed to the Senate by a governor who is under investigation for trying to solicit bribes for that very appointment? No one with even a minor grasp on reality would want that.
While Burris' story keeps changing suspiciously, nothing has been proven to show that the senator did anything wrong as of yet. However, even if he is completely innocent something like this was bound to happen. The circumstances under which he was appointed were bad ones. A corrupt administration chose him in an attempt to save itself.
Burris foolishly accepted the appointment, allowing ambition to trump good judgment. Now his bad judgment is coming to roost. Burris may possibly lose the position he coveted as well as face prison time or other legal sanction. The last eight years have taught us that how something is done is as important as what is done. This applies to everyone, even African American Democrats. It seems that Senator Burris may reap the whirlwind that his own foolishness has sown.
