Illinois Governor Arrested on Corruption Charges
Staff Reporter | Posted December 9, 2008 11:20 AM
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday on charges he conspired to profit off his authority to appoint a successor to Barack Obama's seat in the U.S. Senate.
A 76-page FBI affidavit accuses the governor of offering to sell or trade the Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife, Patti, according to the Wall Street Journal.
"I want to make money," he said, according to an account described in the Journal. The governor's chief of staff, John Harris, was also indicted.
In one excerpt of the complaint, Blagojevich reportedly said he knows that President-elect Obama favors a particular candidate for the Senate seat but complains that the Obama team is "not willing to give me anything except appreciation. F*** them," Blagojevich reportedly says, according to the complaint.
Elsewhere in the complaint, the governor was allegedly caught on tape telling his chief of staff that unless he "received 'something real good' for the appointment of a top adviser to Barack Obama to fill the president-elect's Senate seat he would appoint himself." CBS News and Politico.com report that the governor said: "Unless I get something real good [for Senate candidate 1], s***, I'll just send myself, you know what I'm saying." Blagojevich reportedly said that a Senate seat "is a f***ing valuable thing, you just don't give it away for nothing."
