Sarah Palin's famous turkey interview
Staff Reporter | Posted November 26, 2008 7:35 PMThe Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines "irony" as "incongruity between a situation developed in a drama and the accompanying words or actions that is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play."
One of the best examples of irony may be that now famous interview with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin after she "pardoned" a turkey last week in her home state.
A local news story on KTUU channel 2 in Anchorage showed the former Republican vice presidential nominee visiting a turkey farm to save a fortunate fowl while a few unlucky turkeys are literally slaughtered behind her.
While the farm worker grinds down turkeys behind her, Palin seems oblivious to his activities as she expresses her Thanksgiving gratitude and delights in the opportunity to escape the "heavy handed politics that invites criticism."
The video on YouTube is so popular that it had received 2.7 million hits as of Thanksgiving eve.
"Certainly we'll probably invite criticism for even doing this too," Palin admits to a reporter, "but at least this was fun."
Asked what she planned to cook for Thanksgiving, Palin said: "I'll be in charge of the turkey." She added: "So I'm where need to be today to prepare for that."
