Obama, McCain meet in Chicago
Staff Reporter | Posted November 17, 2008 4:30 PM
For the first time since the election two weeks ago, President-elect Barack Obama met with his former rival, Senator John McCain.
The meeting, which took place at Obama's transition headquarters in Chicago on Monday, was also attended by the incoming White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a close confidante to McCain.
"We had a productive conversation today about the need to launch a new era of reform where we take on government waste and bitter partisanship in Washington," Obama and McCain said in a joint statement released after the meeting. "We hope to work together in the days and months ahead on critical challenges like solving our financial crisis, creating a new energy economy, and protecting our nation's security."
There was no word about how the two former rivals might work together, and despite Obama's desire to appoint Republicans to his cabinet, there was no indication that McCain would be offered a position or that he would be interested in accepting such a post.
Although the presidential campaign has ended, the two party nominees have chosen different sides in one last campaign. Obama has offered assistance to Georgia Democratic Senate candidate Jim Martin and McCain has campaigned for incumbent Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss. Voters in the state will decide between the two men in a runoff election next month that could tilt the Democrats to a filibuster-proof Senate. Democrats will hold 57 seats in the new Senate, with three races -- Alaska, Minnesota and Georgia -- still undecided.
In the spirit of unity, the Obama transition team posted on its web site several comments from Americans who had written the president-elect urging him to work with McCain and the GOP. "If you truly want to gain the support and respect of those who did not vote for you, you could 'reach across the aisle' so to speak and begin with incorporating some of the ideas from the Republicans," wrote Tamara from Springfield, Oregon.
"Please work with Senator McCain," Bill from Minneapolis wrote. "I believe that 'country first' is not just a campaign slogan for him. He is a person on the 'other side of the aisle' who could be very effective in bringing the other caucus along."
