Left and right debate bailout proposals
Staff Reporter | Posted November 12, 2008 12:26 PM
"The U.S. government is taking steps to help the volatile market and ailing economy," CNBC reports. But the infusion of taxpayer dollars to support private businesses is causing concern in some quarters.
William Niskanen of the Cato Institute and Keith Boykin of The Daily Voice debated that issue Wednesday morning on CNBC.
Niskanen called the auto industry bailout a "mistake," but Boykin described it as "part of a pattern" with other bailouts.
"You can't spend $150 billion to bail out AIG, a financial institution basically, an insurance giant that most people in middle America have never heard of, and then refuse to help out a middle American company like GM and the big three automakers that are struggling," said Boykin. "I think it sends the wrong signal. It sends a signal of unfairness," he said.
Niskanen suggested that the auto industry should live by the free market. "Most of the American airlines and most American steel companies have gone through bankruptcy [and] they're continuing to operate," he said.
Boykin disagreed with the comparison. "You can't really compare it to the auto industry or the steel industry," he responded, "because people don't own airlines, they don't own steel. But people actually own automobiles and they have a relationship with the auto dealers and the auto manufacturers."
Boykin suggested the auto manufacturers would go out of business if they had to declare bankruptcy.
