It's almost unfair to call Obama the president elect considering the amount of work he has done, and is required to do, before he is even sworn in. It appears that President Bush, not one for overburdening himself with work, has decided to sit things out until he passes on the keys to Air Force One. Besides trying to sneak executive orders through that would stymie Obama, Bush hasn't done much, despite a horrendous economic situation, and a couple of wars he started. Obama has a lot on his shoulders and hopefully the public will give him time to adjust to the weight before we demand results.
Obama may be a president who doesn't get a honeymoon period. This is mostly due to factors beyond his control. He is taking control of a nation whose fiscal resources have been drained and that suffers from deferred maintenance in its social, political, and physical infrastructure. We are a nation that spends a great deal on education but who produce subpar students. We are a nation that remains divided despite the winning of Virginia and North Carolina. And we are a civilization that is at a crossroads where we will either rebuild ourselves or descend into entropy.
That being the case, if you are a progressive who wants everything changed now, a purist who wants only fired up community organizers in the cabinet, or a, rightfully so, enraged anti-Lieberman Democrat, give the president elect some wiggle room. He has taken on a task that will likely steel three years of vitality for every one he serves in office, and he deserves the same amount of time to make a change as we gave the last president.
