Could Colin Powell endorse Obama?
Staff Reporter | Posted October 15, 2008 11:19 AMFormer Secretary of State Colin Powell, who served under three Republican presidents, may be ready to endorse Democrat Barack Obama for president, according to at least one source.
"Powell has made it clear that he has been thinking about an endorsement for a long time but wanted to hear more from the candidates before making his choice," writes Huffington Post columnist Lawrence O'Donnell. "It now seems beyond doubt that Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama," O'Donnell writes.
O'Donnell predicts that Powell's endorsement "will be perfectly timed to dominate a news cycle or two" and will give Obama more credibility as a commander-in-chief of the military.
It's not the first time during the campaign season when rumors have spread about a possible Powell endorsement. Fox News commentator Bill Kristol predicted that General Powell would endorse Obama and possibly speak at the Democratic Convention in Denver, but that never happened. And former Carter national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski told the Huffington Post in August that he "expects" Powell to endorse Obama for president.
Powell did not appear at either convention and has not endorsed either candidate for president, but he has been in the news this week. Powell, 71, appeared at a hip hop dance festival and actually demonstrated a few of his moves on stage. He also served as a character witness for Alaska's Republican Senator Ted Stevens in the corruption trial against him.
Powell was the first African American Secretary of State and the first and only to serve as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest position in the U.S. military.
