Colin Powell endorses Obama
Staff Reporter | Posted October 19, 2008 10:47 AMFormer Secretary of State Colin Powell, who served under three Republican presidents, has endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president.
Powell, the first African American Secretary of State and the first and only to serve as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made his announcement on NBC's "Meet The Press" Sunday morning with Tom Brokaw.
Powell told Brokaw that Obama had "met the standard" to lead the country "because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America." The retired general also predicted that Obama would be a "transformational president."
Although some Republicans would likely try to minimize the endorsement as a gesture of racial solidarity, Powell told Brokaw that "all Americans should be proud, not just African-Americans." He said an Obama presidency "would not just electrify our country, it would electrify the world."
Last week, The Daily Voice reported that Powell might endorse Obama after Huffington Post columnist Lawrence O'Donnell predicted a Powell endorsement could be on the way. O'Donnell predicted the general's endorsement would be "perfectly timed to dominate a news cycle or two" and would give Obama more credibility as a commander-in-chief of the military.
During the summer, Fox News commentator Bill Kristol predicted that General Powell would endorse Obama and possibly speak at the Democratic Convention in Denver, but that never happened. And former Carter national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski told the Huffington Post in August that he "expects" Powell to endorse Obama for president.
Powell did not appear at either convention and did not endorsed either candidate for president, but he broke his silence this morning by announcing his support for Obama. The news came just days after Powell served as a character witness for Alaska's Republican Senator Ted Stevens in the corruption trial against him.
