To be accepted to an Ivy League school is an honor in this country. My husband is an Ivy League graduate and I have two cousins that are Princeton graduates, one graduated from Cornell and another one who is a graduate of Harvard Law School.
I state this as a source of pride not as an attempt to boast. They all worked hard to acquire their degrees.
So when I hear Republican operatives making fun of Barack Obama because he is a product of the Ivy League it makes me mad. To hear them try to spin a positive into a negative is frightening. It is another attempt to make Americans think he is not one of us.
Well who is this "us"? Is the new "us" the kind of person who attends 5 or 6 colleges in pursuit of one degree? That's part of the Sarah Palin story.
Obama is not some aloof intellectual who only wants to sit around spouting the theory of relativity. He is a man that worked hard to go to Harvard Law School and he excelled while he was there.
In America we celebrate success stories. We encourage people to pull up by their bootstraps, and we applaud them when they do. So when I see Rudy Giuliani standing on the platform at the GOP convention last week making fun of the Ivy League I know he is articulating the party line, but I also know that whether we are Ivy Leaguers or high school drop outs we are too smart to fall for this one.
