Obama picks Biden
Staff Reporter | Posted August 23, 2008 1:22 AM
Barack Obama has chosen Delaware Senator Joe Biden to be his running mate.
The Obama campaign confirmed the news with a web posting (shown on the left) after 3 in the morning.
A text message sent from the Obama campaign after 3 in the morning read: "Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee. Watch the first Obama-Biden rally live at 3pm ET on www.BarackObama.com."
The story first broke on CNN early Saturday morning when the network reported that it had confirmed Biden's selection. Afterwards, NBC, the New York Times, the Associated Press and other news agencies also reported that Obama had chosen Biden.
But the Obama campaign had not made an official announcement and had not sent out text messages to supporters at the time the news agencies were reporting Biden's selection.
Biden, a six-term senator, was a candidate for president against Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary but his campaign never picked up steam. The 65-year-old senator once referred to Obama as "clean, bright, and articulate," a remark that caused controversy for him just as he launched his campaign.
Biden on the issues is pro-choice, pro gun control and generally pro-gay. He supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), federal hate crime legislation that includes sexual orientation and gender identity as protected categories, and the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell." He does not support same-sex marriage but does support civil unions for gay and lesbian couples, the same position held by Obama.
Biden does not fit neatly into liberal or conservative boxes on the issues. He voted for the resolution authorizing war with Iraq but has since become a vocal critic of President Bush's war policy. He also supports the death penalty and voted for the PATRIOT Act in 2001.
Elected to the Senate at the age of 29 in 1972, Biden turned 30 just weeks before taking the oath of office as a senator. Biden chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on which Obama also serves, and previously chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Biden ran unsuccessfully for President in 1988 but his campaign ended after he was accused of plagiarizing a speech by then British Labour Leader Neil Kinnock.
The son of a car dealer, Biden has middle class roots. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965 and from Syracuse Law School in 1968. He currently lives in New Castle, Delaware with his wife Jill Tracy Jacobs. His first wife, Neila Hunter, died in 1972.
Biden is Catholic and has three living children: Joseph R. "Beau" Biden III, Robert Hunter Biden, and Ashley Biden (with Jill Tracy Jacobs). One of his sons is scheduled to be deployed to Iraq soon. Biden's daughter Amy died in 1972.

Last I participated here, one of The Daily Voice editors censored my article using a lame excuse comments cannot be longer than an original article. Subsequently, I have noted this censorship is not applied to others, well evidenced by a participant's lengthy comments found on this page.
I am not motivated to add my significant writing talents and my significant knowledge to a site which practices selective censorship; this smacks of bigotry much as Brucito displays extreme bigotry.

Had the Clintons conducted themselves in a manner befitting an ex-president and first lady we may not be in this situation. They behaved like childish rogues who were unsatisfied with the new direction the country was begging for. That is a Clinton problem--not an Obama one. Hillary and her angry, dismissive husband are part of the problem--definitely not the solution.

I 100% believe the media shares the blame in how this division between the camps is being played out. They also share the blame for those who share your negative thoughts about Obama. That sword of media culpability cuts both ways. Don't decry talking "bad about dem clintons" and turn around and then talk bad about Obama.
