New McCain ad continues hit on Obama as a 'celebrity'
Staff Reporter | Posted August 22, 2008 11:48 AMA new John McCain ad continues to attack Barack Obama as a "celebrity" and claims that Obama is a rich celebrity who doesn't have to worry about family budgets.
The ad begins with footage of people chanting Obama while the announcer says: "Celebrities don't have to worry about family budgets, but we sure do. We're paying more for food and gas, making it harder to save for college, retirement."
The ad then goes on to attack Obama by suggesting, falsely according to analysts, that he will raise middle class taxes. "Obama's solution? Higher taxes called 'a recipe for economic disaster.' A quote from the Las Vegas Review Journal appears on the screen at this point.
The announcer continues: "He's ready to raise your taxes, but not ready to lead."
The ad comes despite recent news that Senator McCain has so many homes that he doesn't remember how many he owns, and as Democrats point out that the Arizona senator flies in a private jet and wears $520 Italian shoes.
Greg Sargent at Talking Points Memo calls it audacious for the Republican candidate. "One thing this is a reminder of is the audacity of the Roveian up-is-downism the McCain team is now resorting to," writes Sargent.
"McCain is the grandson of admirals, married a wealthy heiress and has eight to 11 homes, while Obama was raised by a single mother, went to school on scholarships and worked his way up to his current station? Doesn't matter. We'll just say that Obama's the out-of-touch elitist -- that up is down -- over and over again as often as it takes to change reality," says Sargent.
