McCain, Obama woo conservative Christians at Rick Warren forum
Staff Reporter | Posted August 17, 2008 5:30 PMThe two men hoping to become president of the United States appeared on stage together on Saturday for a forum on religious issues sponsored by evangelical pastor Rick Warren.
The forum took place at Warren's Saddleback Church, where the two candidates shook hands, hugged and stood onstage with Warren, the first time they appeared together in public since the end of the primary season, according to the Associated Press.
The two men discussed abortion, same-sex marriage and other controversial issues during their forum, where observers noted their stylistic differences as much as their policy differences. "Republican John McCain used anecdotes and carefully honed campaign positions, while Democrat Barack Obama responded philosophically to questioning," according to the AP account.
Warren draws more than 20,000 people to his weekly services, and his book The Purpose-Driven Life became a huge best seller.
The Rev. Thomas Reese, a senior fellow at Georgetown's Woodstock Theological Center, criticized Warren's decision to hold the event inside his church. "I think that is inappropriate," said Reese. "A church hall would be OK but not the sanctuary which should be reserved for worship service."
Meanwhile, the Rev. C. Welton Gaddy, president of Interfaith Alliance, praised Warren, but warned that "some of the questions Pastor Warren posed crossed the line and promoted the fiction that the American people are electing a pastor-in-chief, rather than a commander-in-chief."
