IOC President criticizes Bolt for lack of respect
Staff Reporter | Posted August 21, 2008 12:23 PMJamaica's Usain Bolt set two new world records, won two gold medals, and left his opponents in the dust as he sprinted to victory in the 100 and 200 meters at the Beijing Olympics. But that's not enough to satisfy some critics.
"I have no problem with him doing a show," said International Olympic Committee chief Jacques Rogge after Bolt won the 200 on Wednesday night.
"But I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters," Rogge said.
Rogge was referring to Bolt's behavior in Saturday's 100 meter final, according to CNN, where the Jamaican sprinter eased up in the final meters, looked around with arms outstretched and "pounded his chest" before crossing the line in a world record of 9.69 seconds.
"I understand the joy," Rogge told the Associated Press. "He might have interpreted that in another way, but the way it was perceived was 'catch me if you can.' You don't do that. But he'll learn. He's still a young man."
Bolt, who just turned 22 on Thursday, ran a world record 19.30 seconds in the 200, a time that shattered Michael Johnson's 12-year world record and made the Jamaican sprinter the first runner since Carl Lewis, and the second in history, to win the 100 and 200 at the Olympics.
Bolt also became just the ninth man in modern Olympic history to complete the 100 and 200 sprint double, according to the Associated Press and the first ever to set world records in both events at the Olympics.
Bolt had already set a world record in the 100 meters as he became officially "the fastest man in the world." Rogge would not deny Bolt's athletic accomplishments, but warned that the young runner "still has to mature."
"I would love him to show more respect for his competitors," said Rogge. "That's not the way we perceive being a champion. But he will learn in time. He should shake hands with his competitors and not ignore them. He'll learn that sooner or later. But (he's) a great athlete, of course."

Yeah I guess it is hard to believe that a black man can run a race without cheating--beating another black man's record--who didn't cheat.
