Democrats target North Carolina race

Democrats have begun to target the U.S. Senate race between Republican Elizabeth Dole and Kay Hagan.

The race, which is described as "unexpectedly competitive" by CNN, pits North Carolina's only female U.S. senator against Hagan, a female state senator.

MoveOn.org has spent almost half a million dollars on an ad accusing Dole and presidential candidate John McCain of being "in the pocket of Big Oil."

"We could have provided clean energy for a million homes ... or reduced our dependence on foreign oil," the announcer says in the ad. "Instead, John McCain and Elizabeth Dole allowed big oil companies to keep $13.5 billion in tax breaks."

Meanwhile, another ad by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, attacks Dole for her ineffectiveness in Washington. In the DSCC ad, two old men sit on a porch in rocking chairs and debate if Elizabeth Dole is 92nd or 93rd in effectiveness out of the 100 members of the Senate "after 40 years in Washington."

According to the text posted on the ad's YouTube page, Dole ranks 93rd in effectiveness and votes with President Bush 92 percent of the time.

Polls in North Carolina show that Dole holds a "single-digit percentage point lead" over Hagan, according to CNN.

This is the MoveOn.org ad accusing Dole and McCain of being in the "pocket" of big oil.

This is Democrat Kay Hagan's ad against Elizabeth Dole, which also targets oil companies as promises to "level the playing field."
