Cullen Jones becomes second African American male to win gold medal in swimming
Staff Reporter | Posted August 11, 2008 10:23 AMIn what was described as "one of the all-time great relay swims," the United States team of Michael Phelps, Garret Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak broke the world record and captured the gold on Monday in the Men's 4 x 100 meter freestyle.
The US team beat out France by 0.08 seconds and third-place Australia, and in the process shaved nearly 4 seconds off the world record set by the US on Saturday.
But one of the highlights of the event was 24-year-old Cullen Jones, who had just recently become the first African American swimmer to hold or share a world record in swimming, and now becomes the second African American swimmer to win a gold medal at the Olympics. Anthony Ervin was the first, winning the 50-meter freestyle in a tie with Gary Hall Jr. in the Athens games in 2000.
The victory also gave Michael Phelps his second gold medal of the games.
