Busted! More drama in Detroit
Staff Reporter | Posted August 7, 2008 6:47 PM
The drama in Detroit continues.
Just two days after his mom won a close re-election primary vote, embattled Detroit Mayor Kwawme Kilpatrick was thrown in jail on Thursday for violating the conditions of his bond.
As Kilpatrick was on his way to jail, he apologized for taking a trip to Canada without permission from the court. But the judge said the mayor should be treated like any other citizen and put in jail.
Kilpatrick's attorneys will be in court Friday morning, and there are reports he may be facing another charge on Friday for allegedly assaulting a sheriff's deputy.
Opponents of Kilpatrick have called on the mayor to resign, but so far he has given no indication that he plans to do so.
The mayor, who is already under indictment for lying under oath about an extramarital relationship, was charged just last month with lying about other romantic relationships as well.
The mayor was accused of "exchanging romantic text messages with additional women," in addition to the intimate relationship with his former chief of staff Christine Beatty.
In light of the new allegations, the prosecutor's office amended charges against the mayor, but Kilpatrick has accused prosecutor Kym Worthy of a "personal vendetta" against him. "She has no case, and the city is tired of it," Kilpatrick reportedly said.
The Detroit City Council has called for the mayor's resignation and has reportedly asked Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to remove Kilpatrick from office. Kilpatrick has said he has no plans to leave office. The 38-year-old mayor is due in court on September 22.
