Is it over?
Staff Reporter | Posted June 1, 2008 1:25 PM
If you look at the calendar, the Democratic primary race ends on Tuesday, June 3.
If you look at the political climate, on the other hand, that's a different story.
The Democrats wrapped up a divisive meeting of the party's rules and bylaws committee on Saturday with mixed results.
On the one hand, the committee unanimously agreed -- 27-0 with one abstention -- to award all delegates to Florida in a compromise that would give each delegate one-half a vote.
On the other hand, the committee was much more divided about what to do about Michigan, with 19 members of the committee voting to award half-votes to that state's delegation and 8 members opposed to the plan. Some opponents objected to the idea of awarding uncommitted Michigan delegates to Barack Obama when his name did not appear on the ballot in that state.
The activities of the day did not please everyone, and a prominent Clinton supporter on the committee told the panel that his candidate may bring it up again later on this summer. "Mrs. Clinton has instructed me to reserve her rights to take this to the credentials committee," said Harold Ickes. Some Clinton supporters in the audience cheered and yelled, "Denver! Denver! Denver!," a reference to the party's August convention in Denver, Colorado.
At the end of the process, Clinton adviser Harold Ickes told the committee, "Mrs. Clinton has instructed me to reserve her rights to take this to the credentials committee," suggesting that the issue was still not settled for the Clinton campaign.
Nor did the Solomonic compromise appease some Clinton supporters, who chanted, "Denver! Denver! Denver!" as a possible suggestion that Clinton might take the issue all the way to the Democratic Party Convention in Denver in August.
Speaking outside the committee meeting, a Clinton supporter named Harriet Christian predicted Clinton supporters would abandon the party and McCain would win in 2008 because a white woman had been pushed out of the way for "an inadequate black man."
While Obama's campaign prepares for the possibility that it may reach the new magic number of 2,118 delegates needed to clinch the nomination this week, Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe insisted that she had won the popular vote (with Michigan) and would not give up before a candidate won the necessary number of delegates to clinch the nomination.
So the lingering issue of Michigan still hangs in the balance and could affect the actual delegate number the Clinton campaign believes is necessary to win the nomination. Although the last Democrats vote in the primaries in South Dakota and Montana on Tuesday, it's not yet clear that the race will be over then.
