Is America ready for a Black First Lady?
Staff Reporter | Posted June 12, 2008 9:38 AM
Today's news story that Fox News had labeled Michelle Obama as Barack Obama's "baby mama" was probably the first time a potential first lady had been referred to with that title.
For some reason, the mention of Michelle Obama is enough to upset some conservatives.
In some ways, she's an untraditional candidate for first lady in the sense of the woman who stays at home and smiles for the cameras behind her husband. But that mold was broken decades ago by Eleanor Roosevelt.
Hillary Clinton, a powerful attorney before she came to Washington, shattered the mold when she served as first lady. Before her husband took office, their opponents attacked the Clintons for promising a "co-presidency" that would feature a strong, powerful career woman in the White House alongside her husband. The Clintons retreated from that idea, but some of the traditionalists never forgot it, especially after Mrs. Clinton led her husband's effort for health care reform in 1993 and 1994.
Laura Bush, the librarian, fit more into the traditional mold of a first lady, but even she broke a bit from the old-fashioned mold, wearing pant suits instead of dresses, for instance, and coming to the White House with her own career.
Democratic candidates have a history of picking strong wives. Tipper Gore in 2000 had her own record of going after the entertainment industry, and Theresa Heinz Kerry had a reputation for speaking her mind as well in 2004.
In the 2008 election, the top three Democratic primary candidates offered some variation of a new package. All three candidates -- Obama, Clinton and Edwards -- were lawyers married to lawyers.
But Michelle Robinson Obama was no ordinary presidential candidate's wife. She, like her husband, is also African American, and America has never had a black first lady. Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was born in Chicago on January 7, 1964 and grew up in the predominantly black south side of Chicago.
Educated at Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Robinson returned to Chicago and went to work for the law firm of Sidley Austin, where she met her future husband when he came in as a summer associate and she was his designated mentor. She went on to work on the staff of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and for the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago Hospitals.
But Michelle Obama is being defined by more than her accomplishments and her resume. She's also been the subject of criticism from some observers who jumped on a remark she made in a speech this year that she was "really proud" of her country for the first time in her adult life.
Last month, Senator Obama told the Republicans to "lay off" his wife, but his threat seemed to have little effect. Since Obama's warning, the Internet has been abuzz with the story of an alleged videotape featuring Michelle Obama that would rock her husband's campaign. It was supposed to surface last Wednesday, the day after Obama won the Democratic nomination. It never did.
Obama the candidate all but called it a smear campaign. "We have seen this before. There is dirt and lies that are circulated in e-mails, and they pump them out long enough until finally you, a mainstream reporter, asks me about it," he told a reporter. "That gives legs to the story. If somebody has evidence that myself or Michelle or anybody has said something inappropriate, let them do it," he responded.
Writing on his blog recently, Clay Cane said he was "taken aback" by the scrutiny over Michelle Obama during the campaign. As he put it, "never in political history has a candidate's wife been used in a political ad. Why is there so much venom towards her?"
Some, even on this web site, have criticized the Obamas for giving "dap" (a fist bump) to one another at Obama's victory rally last Tuesday, while others have pointed toward Michelle Obama's 1985 Princeton thesis as evidence that her views differ from her husband's "trans-racial" or "post-racial" politics.
"Predominately White universities like Princeton are socially and academically designed to cater to the needs of the White students comprising the bulk of their enrollments," Michelle Robinson wrote back then.

However, sissified Black America is sure making an issue of skin color. "Leave my wife alone!" This is laughable. Man-up or get out of our way; America doesn't do diapers.
A serious problem is developing, a problem which will render Barack Obama a completely impotent president. So many black Americans are sissified, so prone to calling their own shadows racists, Americans will eventually become tired of this behavior and take to serious protest. Our representatives on Capital Hill will become sensitive to their voter constituency complaints about constantly being labeled racist this and racist that, they will become sensitive to voters who place them in office, then stop cooperating with Barack Obama. Rather quick, Obama will become a "lame duck" president for his entire term of office.
Problem is Black America will become embolden, "Our president is black, you cannot touch us! We are in power!" Just as quick as Obama is rendered an impotent lame duck president, many of Black America will scream "racist!" when any America sneezes or farts. Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakhan, Wright, Pfleger, Meeks and others will jump on the bandwagon and begin screaming "racist!" when any American elects to read "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" to American children. "Snow White! Racist literature!"
Black Americans will work at having America believe there are "white devils" hiding under our beds, hiding in our toilet tanks, hiding in exhaust pipes of our cars, hiding in our own shadows. This is already happening. Look around, any person who is not an Obama supporter is instantly assaulted with insults and claims of being racist. This sissified behavior is really bad now and will become much worse if Obama is elected president.
Black America is setting itself up for being labeled Black Supremacists. Should sissified Black America not quit with this labeling a person a racist for scratching his butt, America will begin kicking the butts of Black America.
Black America needs to man-up and start accepting responsibility for and consequences of their actions, rather than blaming everything on racism; Americans are becoming annoyed by this.

Michelle Obama wrote those words, Michelle is responsible for her words. Her graduate thesis is a fair political target.
This alleged "tape" of Michelle uttering "Whitey" I am sure is a complete hoax. This is not a fair political target.
Obama establishing a "fight the smears" web site is a bad political mistake. This will only serve to bring more attention to smears and rumors and will only serve to cause more smears and rumors to appear. I am expecting web sites to appear which argue those smears and rumors are true. Obama should ignore those smears and rumors then allow Americans to discover truth on their own.
Americans are not stupid. We are quite capable of discerning what is true, and what is not true. I am intellectually insulted Obama assumes Americans are not capable of discerning truth.

All, In order to write in paragraphs, you must use HTML tags.
Using the HTML tag "p" enclosed in < > at the beginning of your sentence, allow you to write in paragraphs. Every paragraph starting with an HTML tag, must end with an HTML tag.
For example “p†enclosed between < > starts the paragraph and “/p†enclosed between < > ends the paragraph. Quotes are not part of the HTML tags.
In order too BOLD a word, use the HTML tag “b†enclosed between < > at the beginning of the word and “/b" at the end of the word.
For more information about HTML tags, please Google basic HTML tags. Please note that I am unable to show actual format of HTML code in my post because it will be interpreted by the web browser

Better to ask how many people are in a position to attend Princeton. You must be very wealthy and well connected to attend. Princeton is an exclusive private college. Those who cannot afford Princeton rely on scholarships and grants but still must be well connected.
Less than ten percent of applicants are accepted. Enrollment is limited to about twelve-hundred per year. Costs on a yearly basis runs $35,000 to $45,000 depending if a student lives off campus or on campus, and that is, again, yearly costs.
Princeton only accepts the most elite of the elite. However, quality of education at Princeton is truly no better than an average state university or college at significantly less cost.
This issue of quality of education being equal at an affordable average college and an expensive private college is well evidenced by our current American president. Our George Bush attended Yale, a private college, and Bush is about as smart as a bucket of rocks.
