Six black superdelegates flock to Obama
Staff Reporter | Posted June 3, 2008 11:51 PM

Senator Barack Obama has picked up half a dozen black superdelegates in the past 24 hours, according to a new tally by The Daily Voice. Obama has now clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, in part with the help of African American superdelegates who have swung to his side.
Four members of the Congressional Black Caucus endorsed Obama on Tuesday, the final day of the Democratic primary season. Previously uncommitted superdelegates James Clyburn, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick and William Jefferson announced their support for Obama Tuesday before the polls closed. In addition, Rep. Maxine Waters announced that she would switch her support from Clinton to Obama.
In addition to the CBC members, two other black superdelegates also joined the Obama team today before the polls closed. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, a superdelegate by virture of his position with the National Conference of Democratic Mayors, endorsed Obama, and Mississippi Democratic Party chairwoman Carnelia Pettis-Fondren endorsed Obama today as well.
According to a new estimate by The Daily Voice, only 5 black convention superdelegates remained uncommitted as of 9 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday. The six remaining superdelegates are Donna Brazile, Gilda Cobb-Hunter, Dr. Inez Crutchfield, Alexis Herman, and Lottie Shackleford. Rep. Albert Wynn (D-MD) is also uncommitted, but he will be leaving office before the Democratic Convention in August.
