Exit polls: Economy #1 issue in NC, IN; Blacks make up 1/3 of voters in NC
Staff Reporter | Posted May 6, 2008 6:19 PM
That's higher than all the previous primaries and caucuses so far, according to AP.
In other developments, nearly 10 percent of voters in North Carolina identified as Republicans, possibly in response to calls from Rush Limbaugh and others for GOP voters to influence the outcome of the Democratic primary. That could be good news for Hillary Clinton.
There's also good news for Barack Obama. Almost a third of voters in the North Carolina primary were African Americans, according to the exit poll estimates.
ABC News reported that exit polls showed the effects of the controversy over the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Less than half of Democratic primary voters in Indiana and North Carolina said the Wright story was "an important factor in their vote," ABC reported.
But Obama may be helped by exit poll numbers showing that an unusually large percentage of voters made up their minds more than a week ago, suggesting they may not have changed their minds in light of the controversy.
More than 60 percent of voters said they would be satisfied with either Clinton or Obama at the top of the ticket, according to ABC News.
