Could she pull it off?
Staff Reporter | Posted May 13, 2008 9:30 AM
Some of Clinton's aides are predicting she'll finish the primary season next month with more overall votes than Barack Obama, and polls now show most Democrats think she should remain in the race.
While a number of critics and pundits believe the race is over, many of Clinton's supporters still believe she has a chance to win.
Clinton holds a 40-point lead in some polls ahead of today's West Virginia primary. A victory of that size could contradict the popular perception that the Democratic primary contest has ended. But the two Democratic campaigns have taken different approaches to the final primaries ahead.
Although he outspent Clinton in money, Barack Obama hardly even campaigned in West Virginia, where polls show he has little or no chance of winning. Asked what would be a good showing for him, the Illinois senator argued that anything above 20 percent would be acceptable. Aside from downplaying expectations, his campaign has tried to move on from the primaries and focus on Senator John McCain instead.
While Clinton will deliver an almost certain victory speech tonight, Obama will not speak at all this evening, choosing to decline unedited free airtime on the cable TV news networks. If he were to speak, he might not have much to boast about after the primary tonight. Obama has decided to go to Missouri instead of West Virginia.
Despite a possible blowout this evening, the Obama campaign remains confident. They lead in delegates, superdelegates, popular vote and states won, and they're trying to project a sense of confidence without appearing arrogant, according to analysts. Both campaigns have cut down on the attacks against one another and focused more on McCain instead.
But whether Clinton can pull it off will ultimately depend on the superdelegates. Even if she wins huge victories in all the remaining primaries and pulls close to Obama in pledged delegates, neither candidate will have enough votes to win the nomination outright without the help of the superdelegates.
