75,000 people
Staff Reporter | Posted May 19, 2008 1:42 AM
The huge crowd, gathered at an outdoor rally at Waterfront Park in Portland, included 60,000 people inside the gates and another 15,000 outside, according to the Obama campaign.
"The sea of heads stretches for half a mile along the grassy embankment, while others watch from kayaks and power boats bobbing on the Willamette River," the Washington Post reported. The newspaper said that even more people hugged the rails of the steel bridge that stretches across the water and crowds were even watching from jetties on the opposite shore."
The New York Times called it "the largest crowd of his campaign so far." "Wow! Wow! Wow!" were his first words as he surveyed the multitude, which included people in kayaks and small pleasure craft on the river on an unseasonably hot day," the Times reported.
John Kerry drew a huge crowd of 45,000 people when he visited Portland as the Democratic nominee in August of 2004, but Obama "topped that without even being the official nominee," the Associated Press reported. AP said the crowd was filled with "sunscreen-smeared babies in sun hats, union members in matching T-shirts, elderly ladies fanning themselves under the hot sun and twenty-somethings dancing to his opening act, the Portland-based band The Decemberists."
In addition to drawing huge crowds, the Illinois senator is also making other moves that position him for the fall general election campaign. His campaign speeches barely mention Senator Hillary Clinton, and he now focuses his attacks on Senator John McCain, the Republican's presumptive nominee.
This week, instead of celebrating what he hopes will be a win in the Oregon primary on Tuesday, Obama will hold a victory rally in Des Moines, Iowa, in the state that gave him his first victory back in January. Iowa will be a key battleground state in the general election.
Obama will also travel to Florida this week, finally campaigning in a state that he and the other Democratic candidates had pledged not to campaign in because it had violated party rules and moved up its primary before Super Tuesday.
Iowa has 7 electoral votes and Florida has 27. Each is expected to be a swing state in a close election.
