Did the Secret Service fail to protect Obama?
Staff Reporter | Posted April 3, 2008 1:11 PMIn the video clip aired on MSNBC, an unknown man on the street walks up to Sen. Obama and confronts him, apparently without the intervention of the Secret Service. The man then attempts to follow Obama into a store, at which point he is restrained.
Later the same man confronts Obama a second time on the street and demands a photograph. Obama apparently complied with the request but reportedly did not smile. "I won't be smiling," Obama said. "You are wearing me out."
A spokesman for the Secret Service reportedly told the media that the man was not a threat. "Had they considered him an immediate security risk, they would have taken action," spokesman Eric Zahren was quoted as saying in the New York Daily News.
This is the second time when questions have been raised about Obama's security detail. In February, the Secret Service reportedly told Dallas police to stop screening for weapons while people were still arriving at a campaign rally for the Illinois senator.
