Campaign brings out black TV pundits
Staff Reporter | Posted April 2, 2008 8:42 AM
CNN contributor Roland S. Martin and CNN's official Obama supporter Jamal Simmons are just two of the many African Americans who have taken to the television this campaign season to talk about politics.
If you're looking for black Republicans, they've got those too. Amy Holmes, a CNN analyst, is perhaps the most visible black Republican on the cable news channels. But she's not alone on the right. Michelle Bernard, officially an Independent, is also a regular on MSNBC, and Joe Watkins, a Republican strategist and ordained minister in Philadelphia, is an analyst for MSNBC.
The presidential campaign has made virtual media stars of several new black political analysts on television this year, according to an article in today's New York Times. But perhaps the most enduring African American political commentator is Donna Brazile, the only African American to ever run a major national presidential campaign. Brazile ran Al Gore's 2000 campaign and now serves as a CNN contributor.
Even Fox News has its commentators of color. Juan Williams, Angela McGlowan and Michelle Malkin are included in their lineup, according to the Times.
Election nights are big opportunities for the TV personalities and the cable news networks. On any given election night, you're likely to see Eugene Robinson on MSNBC, Martin and Brazile on CNN and Williams on Fox. CNN calls its crew "the best political team on television" while MSNBC boasts of being "the place for politics."
Then there's a crew of regulars who appear on various shows, including Tara Setmayer and Keith Boykin, both contributors to The Daily Voice, and Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post. And don't forget about the on-air anchors like Tony Harris, T.J. Holmes and Don Lemon of CNN and Tamron Hall of MSNBC.
Television news is starting to look a little more like the rest of America, but there is still a glass ceiling. There are no black anchors on the three big networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) and no black hosts of any of the prime time cable network shows like "Hardball," "Countdown with Keith Olbermann," "Larry King Live" and "Anderson Cooper 360."
