Decision expected Monday on Detroit mayor's case
Staff Reporter | Posted March 20, 2008 12:04 PMWayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy will announce her decision Monday morning, according to WDIV in Detroit. The charges would come in response to allegations that Kilpatrick lied under oath in a trial last year in which he denied having a romantic relationship with his chief of staff Christine Beatty.
The embattled mayor is under increasing pressure to step down from office, and the city council approved a nonbinding resolution on Tuesday asking Kilpatrick to resign. The Michigan House of Representatives avoided voting on a proposal this week that would have asked Kilpatrick to resign, the Detroit News reported. The proposal came in the form of an amendment to a bill that blocks the state from using public funds to pay for a revote of the Michigan presidential primary.
The newspaper also reported that the mayor's legal defense has cost the city at least $845,282 in attorneys' fees, in addition to the $8.4 million paid out by the city to settle cases arising from a dispute with police officers who said they knew about the mayor's alleged conduct.
They mayor has said he has no plans to step down.
