Terry McMillan honored by Essence magazine

Essence, which describes itself as "preeminent magazine for African-American women," celebrated established and emerging black authors at its first-annual 2008 ESSENCE Literary Awards on February 7, 2008. 

Other categories that will be featured were: Fiction; Non-Fiction; Children's Books; Poetry; Memoir; Commentary/Public Affairs; and Photography. The entries were judged by a "blue ribbon" panel of influential publishing experts, according to Essence.

The magazine also honored the Countee Cullen Branch of the New York Public Library, located in Harlem, as part of the publication's Save Our Libraries campaign.

"Terry McMillan, Bebe Moore Campbell, Gloria Naylor and so many other authors first came to the attention of readers through ESSENCE's pages," said Patrik Henry Bass, Senior editor for Books and Arts.  She is one of only a few authors who have been featured on the magazine's cover.  She appeared on the cover of the June 1996 issue.
