Farrakhan responds to Obama criticism
Staff Reporter | Posted February 28, 2008 5:17 PMThe statement from Farrakhan said it was "in response to outrage expressed by many" after Sen. Obama's criticism of Farrakhan at Tuesday's presidential debate in Ohio.
"Those who have been supporting Sen. Barack Obama should not allow what was said during the Feb. 26 presidential debate to lessen their support for his campaign," said Farrakhan. "This is simply mischief making intended to hurt Mr. Obama politically."
Perhaps anticipating the controversy, the Nation of Islam issued a statement on Sunday, after Farrakhan expressed his support for Obama in his annual "Saviours' Day" address to an estimated 20,000 people at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago.
"Although the Minister did speak complimentary of Sen. Obama, he said he would not tell any one of his followers how to cast their vote, but he did say they should vote 'their own self-interest,'" according to a statement from the Nation.
